A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that there was a Canada Goose with an orange plastic neck collar in Milwaukee's Veterans Park. Eventually I got close enough to the bird to see the number on the collar with my binoculars (the number was U7F5). I posted a note to the BIRDCHAT e-mail list asking how to report banded/collared birds. People pointed me to: http://www.reportband.gov. I filled out a form on the website (haven't heard from them yet). It so happens that someone on the BIRDCHAT list recognized the description of the band. I received the following info from Ken Abraham of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. "The particular collared goose (U7F5) was an After Hatch Year female that we banded on 4 August 2002 on the Hudson Bay Coast of Ontario, near Ft Severn. This bird belonged to the Mississippi Valley Population of Canada geese. Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources bands 6000--7000 Canada geese annually on the Hudson Bay and James Bay coasts. It should be noted that 2002 was the last year that neck collars were applied to these geese, so this bird was in the final cohort of collared birds." I checked Google Maps, and Ft. Severn, Ontario, is about as far north as you can go in Ontario. It's kinda cool to know a little something about the history of a specific bird. There are so many geese in Veterans Park that it's a little hard to conceive of them as individuals...I tend to just think of them collectively as a flock. :-) Bernie Sloan Milwaukee #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
