If anyone is interested in seeing maps and "making a comment" (online also
available) on a new master plan for the state wildlife, fish, natural areas and
Ice Age Trail properties that lie predominately within Waukesha, Walworth,
Racine and Kenosha counties, there is an informational meeting (no formal
presentation) at Bong this week (see below). The results of the meeting in
Mukwonago last week are also below. They are asking for comments in general
and/or specifically about the use of areas (recreational, hunting, birding,
paved roads vs not, new parking lots or other types of access, prescribed
burning, invasive species control, etc.).

Thanks to all of you for participating and sharing your knowledge at the
Mukwonago open house on a stormy, snowy night.
Thirteen brave souls from the public shared their thoughts at the open house
too. Thanks to all of the members of the public for attending the open house
and the thoughtful comments you provided! In particular, the IAT interests had
a very strong showing at this open house.
All of the attendees who left an email are receiving a copy of this email as
well (i.e., Bcc list for privacy purposes).
Please note the following is an informal summary of the public feedback
received at the Mukwonago open house on March 24. A formal update will be
shared with staff and all commenters after the close of the comment period on
April 18.
The following topics and properties were of most interest based on the
conversations and the written comments received last night:
* Ice Age Trail
* future trail segment on the Clover Valley wildlife property
* desire/need for boardwalk (puncheon) sections in wet areas
* siting a dispersed camping area
* extending the 100 yard no hunting zone along future trail segments
* connecting the IAT from eastern Rock County through the Clover Valley
properties to the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
Note: recommendations regarding a future trail segment on the Clover Valley
wildlife property and the need for trail infrastructure can be put forward by
the planning team. However, alignment of the future trail corridor in
Rock-Walworth counties needs to be approved by the TRIAD and certain boardwalk
segments through wetlands may require subsequent regulatory approval.
* hiking, birdwatching, nature photography, preserving native
communities and nature enjoyment were the recreational activities mentioned
most often.
* efforts to protect watersheds, control/manage invasive species and
enhance habitat for endangered/threatened species are strongly supported.
* better parking/turn arounds for buses at the parking lots - buses
bringing school groups to these properties have difficulty using the parking
lots due to their small size.
* add additional canoe launches at Turtle Creek and within the Honey
Creek SBP. Recommendation to remove dams along Honey Creek too.
* hunting and fishing received a few verbal comments.
* Paradise Valley WA birdwatching options including improved access
along the dikes and adding viewing platforms/blinds.
* interest was also expressed in understanding the connection between
the Southeast Region Planning Group process and the on-going KMSF Mukwonago
River Unit/ Lulu Lake SNA master planning as well as a future KMSF-Southern
Unit plan. The Southeast Region planning team is considering the recreation,
habitat management and boundary adjustments being forwarded by the KMSF
Mukwonago River Unit/ Lulu Lake SNA master planning effort. A master planning
effort for the Kettle Moraine State Forest -South Unit is not anticipated for
several more years.
* a desire for continued coordination of land protection and management
efforts between the department and partner groups (e.g., land trusts, IAT
chapters).
* Concern about the sale of certain properties (e.g., Beulah Lake )
