Lucky for you - Eagle Optics has a sale on right now on several very nice scopes, including Kowa and Swarovski. I can highly recommend the Kowa TSN-772 - while 77mm might be a little larger than what you're looking for, it's a fairly compact scope for the power. (Note that the eyepieces are sold separately for Kowa scopes, so the price comparison to other brands should be made with that in mind.) I would echo Chris West's tripod emphasis - having gone from a fairly flimsy, too-short-for-me one to a good carbon-fiber one has made scoping a real pleasure. One other thing - if you're on a field trip, most folks are more than willing to let you look through their scopes. While you can try them at the store, there's nothing quite like real-world conditions...
