A group of birders from Madisonish and Milwaukee area (Quentin Yoerger, Ray Potter, Charles Naeseth, Jim and Sharon Schwartz, Tom Prestby, Peter Bridge and myself) ventured out for our annual northwoods birding trip. We began the day in the Kesheena reservation (Menominee Cty) to sadly discover the blue house on 55 was not the feeding station it had been in past years with only a few feeders present that were EMPTY. We did have 2 BARRED OWLS along the stretch of 55 between Wild Wolf Inn and the blue house. We worked our way north on 55 to HWY 32 in Crandon up to Argonne where we found our first target bird of the day, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS (30). Following Argonne we worked the forest roads in Forest Cty where we located several other target species GRAY JAYS on Pine River Rd at the river crossing and at least two separate BOREAL CHICKADEES along Shelter Valley Rd as well as a flock of 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. So far an enjoyable trip with more to come tomorrow as we bird Vilas and ? Forest counties and likely a stop at Buena Vista Grasslands on the way back south.
