I agree with Tom Erdman that the title was a bit misleading. It turns out that particular cells in one species are not what they thought they were. I guess they needed a "hook" to get people to read the article, and I suspect they caught more than a few of us who are interested in birds. Not the major discovery the title implies. Birds still use the earth's magnetic field to navigate and there be many studies to prove that! Where the sensory mechanism is, for them to do this had been shown not to be where it was thought to be! Are you arguing that birds don't use the earth's magnetic field? This paper offers no proof of that! Rather than finding magnetic nerve cells in pigeons, the authors of the paper found specialized white blood cells that help birds fend off infection. I've summarized the research in a new post on our blog: http://cs.birdwatchingdaily.com/BRDCS/blogs/field_of_view/archive/2012/04/11 /New-study-overturns-prevailing-theory-of-how-birds-navigate.aspx -- Matt Mendenhall Associate Editor, BirdWatching Brookfield, Waukesha County http://www.birdwatchingdaily.com http://twitter.com/mdmendenhall #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
