We started at Thousand's Rock & Thomson Prairies south of Blue Mounds, on the Dane/Iowa Co. line. Eastern Meadowlarks were all over there, but suprisingly not much else besides Red-wings, a few Song Sparrows, a RN Pheasant calling, a Turkey and a couple of Killdeer. Very odd to not at least have Savannah Sparrows, we thought. We continued on down County F to the Prairie Enthusiast's very nice Schurch-Thomson Prairie, where we heard a few Field Sparrows and a couple of Brown Thrashers (both FOY, at least for me.) Again, many E. Meadowlarks, but no other grassland birds. After a coffee stop in Dodgeville, we checked out Gov. Dodge State Park. The Stephens Falls Trail had the expected E. Phoebes (although not by the falls, oddly,) a singing Ruby-crowned Kinglet, YB Sapsucker (the latter two FOYs for me,) and a few other common birds, but no Louisiana Waterthrushes. Twin Valley was pretty uneventful, so we headed over to Cox Hollow. There was a bit of a raptor flight occurring over the parking lot there - lots of TVs, a few Red-tails, No. Harrier, Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks. We were a bit surprised and disappointed not to hear any E. Towhees in the park. Spring Green Preserve was very quiet, with just a few Field Sparrows and little else. Arena Boat Landing had a couple more YB Sapsuckers and a calling Red-shouldered Hawk. Despite the lack of a rarity, it was still a nice day to be out and about with good birding buddies...
