Report of Lake Park Duck Watch on March 3, 2012

Six birders scanned the lake at North Point just north of Bradford
Beach for just over a half hour before moving on to Lakeshore Park.

The highlight was the Harlequin Duck up close up close in the main
embayment just east of Discovery World. This small, round-headed,
very dark gray bird had two white ovals on each side of its head and
a vertical sliver of white on its right side just behind its breast.
It did not seem to have the same sliver of white on the left side.
We did not see the Long-tailed Duck in the pond behind Lakeshore
Park, where it has been seen recently.

Overall numbers of Scaup and Goldeneyes seen were only a few hundred
each, very much decreased from Duck Watches on January and February.
Numbers of Buffleheads were fairly stable at about a hundred total
between the two locations. There were about two dozen Red-breasted
Mergansers, but none were performing courtship displays.

We had a nice lesson in gull variation with just a handful of gulls
up close at North Point: large Ring-billed with clear white nape,
small Ring-billed with dirty gray nape, Herring with clear nape and
bright yellow bill and flesh around eye.
