Now is a good time to start planning a May Day Count with your fellow
birders. May Days can be quite fun, green, competitive, compile
important information (especially if run consistently through the years)
and include as many observers as desired. Your May Day results may be
entered into eBird, too.
Kim Kreitinger does the WSO May Day write-up from a compilation of
reports sent to me. In the Spring 2012 Passenger Pigeon, Kim recaps the
2011 results and notes what constitutes a May Day; this article should
be consulted as a primer. The wonder of a May Day is it brings together
the camaraderie of CBCs, differing in that it is held in the birdy
warmth of May and usually includes one entire county.

No current WSO May Day Form is available, though a new one may be in the
works. But if a new form is not available in time, consider that in the
past many have offered May Day information in their own fashion.
However, to make the information minimally comparable please consider
the list below and include comments on your efforts, odd weather, odd
species, fall outs, missed species...etc.
<mailto:k.kreitinger@xxxxxxxxx>

1. Count Name
2. Date Conducted - Period must fall within a 24-hour calendar day -
count week (CW) birds may be noted as such.
3. County
4. Compiler - Phone, address, E-mail
5. Weather - Sky Conditions at start and end, along with wind direction,
and temperature.
6. Participant data - Total Field Observers, total Field Parties, total
Feeder Watchers, *total Party Hours - on Foot, by Car and hours owling.
7. Provide documentation for any species considered record late or a
Long Form species. A description of oddities, rare or unusual is also
requested.
8. A complete species List - Please enter the total number of each
species seen or heard on the count day. Enter "CW" for any species seen
or heard during the count week but not recorded on the count day. The
count week is defined as 3 days before or after the count date.

*Total party hours is the sum of hours spent in the field by the various
parties. It does not include time owling or observation time of feeder
watchers. Each count REQUIRES a minimum of 8 party hours. *
*

Electronic transmission of the results is requested to me by 10 June
at:* schaufenbuel@xxxxxxxxxxx
