I've been taking a few days to travel to Siren. At the Janesville arboretum, there was what I believe to be a wood thrush sitting on a nest about 4.5 feet off the ground, in plain sight and across from several benches while a few hikers passed by and I took dozens of photos. I also watched a robin build a nest and two BC chickadees removing beaks full of wood shavings from their nest in a dead tree. The UW arboretum had a good variety of birds, including indigo bunting, cardinal, orioles, fly by a path with gurgling water emptying into a waterway. Goose Island in LaCrosse was slow until I stopped at one of the picnic areas and found a YB sapsucker nest in a dead tree about 8 feet off the ground. And in Trempeauleau, I do believe I saw one of the western grebes. It was at least 75-100 yards off shore (along the dike to the island), but a digital photo that I blew up on the camera screen certainly looks like the w. grebe in my field book. I'm now in Spooner and will visit a few spots here this afternoon before heading to Siren. Looking forward to a few good days of birding with the experts on Thu-Sun.
