This morning I saw what Iâ??m guessing is a hybrid male Mallard in Ephraimâ??s Eagle Harbor. Sorry, no photos. It was at the shoreline with Mallards and Widgeons. It was the normal size (bill and body) of a mallard, and looked like one, but several markings were different. Itâ??s bill was a dull yellow on the sides, the top a dark color. The head was greenish but darker than a mallard. Itâ??s cheeks had a fairly large circle shape in soft orange below and slightly behind the eye. (Quite striking!) The back and sides were grayish tan, with no lateral line or difference, the tone a bit darker than the other male Mallards. Anyone care to guess what hybrid this mallard is....if it is a hybrid. I have no idea. Also saw two Horned Grebes in breeding colors today at Sturgeon Bay canal. One more so than the other. I havenâ??t seen the breeding colors for a long time.
