I stopped along Hwy 49 at Horicon on my way to Oshkosh today. As was mentioned before, the water levels are way up on both sides of the road, but there are still some shorebirds around. Unfortunately, all that I saw were way back on the north side, and they were always flying through my field of view with the scope at ~40X - never could find any after they landed on vegetation mats or mudflats. There were a few hundred Tundra Swans on the Dodge Co. side, but I didn't check for Trumpeters. I concentrated on checking the ducks on the Fond du Lac Co. side. Most were pretty far back and the wind was pretty strong from the south, so I used the car window mount, which worked pretty well to eliminate windshake. There were good numbers of No. Pintail, Gadwall, American Wigeon (I checked those especially carefully,) GW Teal, No. Shovelers, and of course Mallards. Had a couple of interesting ducks that may have been Mallard hybrids, but too far out for much detail. Also experienced my usual momentary surge of excitement when I saw an eclipse-plumaged drake Shoveler. I always want to turn them into something really good, until I realize what they are... All the geese that I checked were Canadas. Peter Fissel Madison WI #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
