My wife and I hit Horicon Marsh today and along Hwy 49 was mostly covered in
ice with a pair of Trumpeter swans and a handful of Canada geese present. We
then did the Auto tour and saw a mature Bald eagle fly toward the nest to the
south and not much else. On the way to Ledge road we saw a pair of Northern
Harriers and a couple solo Harriers. On Ledge road there was a Rough Legged
Hawk kiting at the top of the road. Along the road and at the end there was a
lot of open water with many species of ducks hundreds of Canada geese and a few
formations of Greater White fronted geese. We then headed for the state side
and stopped at the National refuge center were an immature Bald eagle was
soaring. Arriving at the visitor center on the south end it was totally iced in
yet but there were a few geese on the ice of which one was a Canada/Snow gooses
hybrid we have found there four years running. There was also a pair of
Trumpeter swans on the ice. We then decided to hit Hwy 49 on the way out and on
the way we found three Whooping cranes presumably Grasshopper and the kids.
There were many more geese on the ice along Hwy 49 at this time. All in all a
fantastic birding day!!
