We saw the Gyrfalcon yesterday morning perched on the Peavey elevator on Connor's Point in Superior. Got to see it fly too! It was powerful and looked very much at ease, nothing like the bat-out-of-hell flight of it's small Merlin cousin. It seemed more relaxed than the Peregrines I've seen too. Of course it wasn't hunting at that moment, just moving on. I was expecting to see faster than a speeding bullet. We were staying in the Duluth area for a few days and finally saw the Gyr the 3rd day we checked for it. It seems to favor perching on a black thing near the top of the tallest white I-beam structure. All the pictures I've seen had it there, and that's where we saw it too. There are many, many possible perching places around the Superior Harbor. We also spotted the Common Eider both at Barker's Island (Friday) and Canal Park in Duluth (Saturday). She's difficult to pick out among all the very active Mallards until you spot her. Head shape and subtle coloring differences are evident once you see her. Easier to see at Canal Park as the open water is all visible at once (there's no low bridge to hide under as at Barker's Island) and the width of the canal limits how far away the birds can be. Friday at Barker's Island we watched a Snowy Owl make at least 2 attempts at a duck dinner. There's some whitewash on the right peak of the barn red building where it perches. It's presence was attended to by much chaotic flapping quacking and a wholesale abandonment of the open water by the Mallards, but not the Goldeneyes. Nancy Richmond Polar- Langlade Co.
