I was surprised at the large number of shorebirds I saw today on Pancake Island at lake Puckaway in Green Lake County. Easily 50 dunlins, a dozen leasts, 3 semi-palmateds and two white-rumped. There were many others foraging in thick cover (at least 50) and hard to identify. Water levels have finally dropped, leaving a good mudflat that had 73 Forster's terns, 2 Common terns, a Caspian tern, 2 Mute swans, 21 pelicans and a Killdeer loafing. Of course, these birds can only be seen from a boat, since the island is a quarter-miled off shore. -Daryl Christensen Marquette co.
