On Sunday my dad and I found 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS in the Benoit area grasslands of Bayfield County. Not noteworthy for most of you but these were my first in the county and the first documented in the Chequamegon Bay area in several decades. A few documentation images digicoped at 60x can be found at http://www.pbase.com/rbrady/grasshopper2010 Also noteworthy in the grasslands were 24 singing male DICKCISSELS and good numbers of both EASTERN and WESTERN MEADOWLARKS. Unfortunately most of the hay fields hosting these birds have been or are being cut. This continues to be one of the biggest threats to grassland birds here in far northern Wisconsin.
