Beautiful Brown Thrasher singing its heart out in a big oak and thicket at the edge of the Gov Nelson St Park prairie, across from the bench on the trail that goes along the hill and woods, also a couple Eastern Meadowlarks, lots of Field Sparrows, and heard one Song Sparrow, on Sunday noon walk - Paul and Barb Noeldner, Maple Bluff Paul Noeldner 608-698-0104 ethicalguidebook.com / \ (:>) / \ -----Original Message----- From: Peter Fissel [pfissel@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Received: Sunday, 08 Apr 2012, 9:46pm To: Wisconsin Birding Network [wisbirdn@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Subject: [wisb] Horicon Marsh today I got a rather late start this morning, so only had time for a quick drive around Horicon Marsh on my way up to Oshkosh. Dike Rd. was actually pretty dead, although I only went out as far as the dead tree. There were a few (White) Pelicans out on the impoundment, but not all that much else. The flooded spot on W. Point Rd. was just about dried up and only had Canada Geese. Bud Cook had been burned west of the road, so nothing there. Hwy 49 had more No. Shovelers than I think I've ever seen on the north (Fond du Lac Co.) side, along with quite a few Bonaparte's Gulls. I noticed a few Yellowlegs of both species on the south (Dodge Co.) side east of the pumphouse, and then saw that there were quite a few more shorebirds farther out, so I got the scope out. The light was horrible and I was looking at silhouettes, but all appeared to be GYLs, LYLs, and Pectoral Sandpipers. Took a quick spin around the Auto Loop - fairly quiet in the wind, but there were some Scaup on the second-to-last pond that I'm pretty sure were Greaters - heads looked round and bills looked large. If I hadn't been in a bit of a hurry, I'd probably have worked those birds a little harder to be sure. There was another group that were definitely Lesser Scaup a ways away from the others.
