Chuck Roethe and I (with an "unofficial" assist from Peter Gorman) led a Madison Audubon field trip to Gov. Dodge State Park this morning. The weather cooperated, with no rain during the trip (plenty of gnats, though.) We started off on the Stephens' Falls trail, where No. Rough-winged Swallows and E. Phoebes are nesting by the falls. A highlight of the trip was watching an Acadian Flycatcher building her nest right over the trail. Plenty of male Acadians were singing throughout the park, too. Lots of Willow FCs, including across from the falls trail. We missed Louisiana Waterthrush along the creek, but had a nice look at a male Scarlet Tanager later on along the trail. One of the participants mentioned that there were Bell's Vireos along the road to the Cox Hollow campground, so we went there next. We heard two different ones singing, but they avoided being seen. Back along Twin Valley Rd., there were Blue-winged Warblers singing all along on both sides. We finally had one cooperate so everyone could get a look. Coming back on that road, Peter G. heard a Cerulean Warbler, but we could not get a look at it, even though it was singing very persistently not that far into the woods. We never did hear the Kentucky Warbler that Al Shea told me he'd heard the other day along that road. At the Cox Hollow picnic area above the stream to the cascade, we had both first-year and adult male Orchard Orioles in plain view, which was nice. At the boat launch at the other end of the lake, Peter G. and another birder heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, but I could never pick it up. A Veery was calling and singing in that area, too. Curious lack of singing Wood Thrushes today, although I may have heard one call once. I think we ended up in the mid-40s for species count. Thanks to everyone who showed up!
