Yesterday afternoon was a great day for birding Lakeside Park. The water was quite calm on Lake Winnebago. Many Canada Geese, and a few Cackling Geese were present. Ducks included: Mallards, Black Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Shovelers, a Canvasback, and all three Merganser species. An adult Bald Eagle was sitting in the large tree near Stinky Point. Lots of Herring, Ring-billed, and Bonaparte's Gulls, and, the highlight of my day, immature GREAT BLACK BACKED GULL sitting on the water a few hundred yards offshore. It was neat to see a gull the same size as the geese swimming around it. Today, the lake did not hold as many different species, but there was a lot of activity. There were thousands of gulls both flying over the lake and sitting on the grass. Terry Leasa and I were scanning the large flock, when my wife, (who was sitting in the car and uninterested, stepped out and pointed to the immature GLAUCOUS GULL she had spotted as she glanced over. (She's not very interested in birding, and yet she can ID gulls better than I can. She has a gift and I'm trying to get her to use it more) A little colder and windier at the park than yesterday, but all in all another good day.
