On my morning walk today I took the River Trail on the west side of Stoughton. Near my neighborhood. On the north end of the Jackson St pond a large flock of House Finches flew to the tops of the trees. I looked with my cheap bins and counted 60 birds. Continuing on behind the houses near the soccer fields there was a huge flock of House Sparrows. The bushes were full of them. When they flew I could hear the wind noise from the wings flapping! At least 150 in this flock. A large feeding station in the back yard of a Virgin Lk Rd home must attract them. Cheap seed!!! Near Virgin Lk (pond) the woods had a flock of woodpeckers, Downy, Hairy & Red-bellied. Working the trees high and low. Also a small flock of Dark-eyed Juncos with several Black-capped Chickadees and some N. Cardinals mixed in. Just before leaving the trail I spotted a Great Horned Owl siting in an oak. Not a flock tho. The other day I was driving south of town late afternoon and saw a flock of mallards (200+) leaving a plowed field and heading north, presumably to the river. A flock of Canada Geese remained in the field feeding. Lastly the flock of squirrels in my back yard are doing a great job cleaning up after the flocks of messy birds at my feeders. The “Portly Gang” we call them. Patrick Ready Dane Co.#################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
