Subject: [wisb] Eagles' Nest in the Town of Lebanon, Dodge County
I'm so very excited to report that I finally found a Bald Eagles' nest right
here in my own town, only 2 miles from my house! We've had an unusually high
number of visits to our yard by both young and adult Bald Eagles for the past
few months and a week or so ago, when scanning the distant trees with my
spotting scope from our deck, I discovered a huge nest that made me curious.
The only problem was that this nest is located in a tree in the middle of a
farm field. The only potential water would be a nearby farmers' ditch. When I
first photographed the nest last week, I thought, maybe it could just be a
Red-tailed Hawk nest that was really large, but I think my gut was telling me
it could very well be an eagles' nest. Unfortunately, even after visiting the
nest a few times, there was never a bird in sight. About a half hour ago, when
I looked at the nest from my house, I could see a large bird was currently
perched on a branch near the nest, so I hopped in the car and drove over and
sure enough, an adult eagle is sitting there.
I will post pix to my Flickr page later this afternoon, so you can see the nest
and location. I don't think I can fully explain how excited I am about this
find. I had tears in my eyes as I stopped the car on the road to check it out.
The not-so-great thing about this nest's location is there is almost no
shoulder on this particular road. You can bet I'll be on the phone with the
town clerk tomorrow, asking if there's any way the town could put in a bit more
of a shoulder there to make it so people can enjoy seeing this nest more safely.
