After Tom's LeConte's report , I had to get out and give the fields another try. I walked some of Lerner Park ,in Oregon. Lots of sparrows, but mostly Song and Swamp with a few others. No ammodramus sparrows. Then I went to Brooklyn SWA. I walked part of a field where Henslow's nested. May have seen one ,but I didn't pursue it. Then further east on Bellbrook Road, there's a planted partial sunflower and foxtail (?) field. It's in 2 parts and I walked both. After the rains it's very wet. I didn't get any LeConte's. but had 1 possibly 2 Nelson's Sparrows. The first one flew and landed on a tiny willow. It was backlit and I had a hard time getting color. I really tried to make it into a LeConte's, but I could finally see that it didn't have a white median crown stripe. It turns and I could see white streaks on the back and the tail coming down to 2 points. It flew further down. In the same general direction, but over a bit, I got good looks at a Nelson's. This was at the southend of the field near the creek bridge. They were planting pheasants in the area today, so hunting will open this Saturday. Then further east, I had to stop and check out a farm field with some low foxtail. It's open to public use. As I was walking towards the weeds ,I saw a bird that I took as a Vesper Sparrow. Bright white outer tail feathers. But when I got in that area, a longspur took off. I flew up and up and circled around, but never came back. I sure was hoping, because the tail looked more smithy to me.
