Hey Folks,

My co-worker Melissa Keenan and I wanted to share some opportunities to find
some great birds on private lands through the Voluntary Access Program.

Voluntary Public Access (VPA) is a program offered by the Wisconsin DNR that
provides financial incentives to private landowners who open their land to
public access for hunting, fishing, trapping, and wildlife observation. Land
types enrolled include grassland, wetland, forest, and in some cases
agriculture. Some properties are also enrolled in other conservation program
such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) and Conservation Reserve Program
(CRP) and may provide some great shorebird and songbird viewing opportunities.
There are currently 178 leases enrolled totaling 31,000 acres in Wisconsin.
Only the southern 2/3 of the state is eligible for enrollment (see attached
focus area map). Program information and property maps can be found on the VPA
webpage by visiting http://dnr.wi.gov and searching the keyword â??VPAâ??. You
can also â??Subscribe to DNR Updatesâ?? on the VPA webpage and receive email
alerts when new maps or information are added to
the webpage. You can contact Melissa Keenan, VPA program coordinator at
608-266-5560 if you have any specific questions

Melissa alerted me to a property enrolled just east of Fort Atkinson or west of
Prince's Point.  This is a recently restored wetland that may have lots of
ducks/shorebirds this spring with the new water and exposed mud.  This
property is off of Findlay road just south of the Bark River but I don't
believe that it's on the website just yet.

There are likely other great spots and I'd encourage folks to share some
updates with the list as they are discovered!  Keep in mind that these areas
are open to hunting and we are in turkey seasons right now.  So use caution.

Happy Birding,
