John, I believe you might have your "Bills" mixed up. Bill Volkert is the Horicon DNR naturalist/educator who secured the mounted Passenger Pigeon for the Horicon International Education Center collection, and who has given presentations about his travels to South America, etc. Bill Cowart was the birder/hawk watcher/Milwaukee Symphony french horn player who passed away this week. Must have been last spring when we heard Bill talk about finding a mounted Passenger Pigeon is a collection of birds that I believe he was able to secure for the Horicon Marsh. Also enjoyed his talks and slides of trips to South America. I did not know that Bill was a French Horn player in the Milwaukee Symphony - impressive. Died too young thats for sure.
