For the last 3 days, I have seen a bald eagle family on County Road T
south of Hammond. There are 2 fully mature adults (white head & tail),
and 2 younger. The 2 younger ones are mostly brown, but when one flew
up from a deer carcass in the ditch, I saw there was a substantial
amount of white in the tail. There was still some brown, but tail
feathers were maybe 80% white? They have been hanging out in a field on
the north side of T, about 2 miles south of I-94, and maybe half a mile
north of 30th Avenue. Sometimes there is one eating off the deer
carcass in the ditch, but mostly they have been hanging out, just
sitting in the field.
One year old, maybe 2 for the younger ones? I am no expert on aging
sub-adult bald eagles, so if anyone experienced at that gets a look, how
good is my guess? They have been there from afternoon to early
evening. Watch out for work on the bridge.
