Error Message: VFAT Device Initialization Failed

SYMPTOMS
When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message=20
on a blue screen:=20

VFAT Device Initialization Failed=20

A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is=20
unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading.=20

System halted.=20
CAUSE
This problem can occur under any one of the following conditions:=20
If the Ifshlp.sys file is missing from the Windows folder.

-or=20
If the Config.sys file contains a line that points to a previous=20
version of the Ifshlp.sys file.

-or-=20
If the following Ifshlp.sys statement is deleted from the Config.sys=20
file after you reinstall Windows:=20
DEVICE=3DC:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys=20

-or-=20
If the [Paths] section in the Msdos.sys file is incorrect.

-or-=20
If a Winboot.ini file from a previous incomplete installation is=20
present in the root folder on your Startup disk.

-or-=20
If a "maxfilecache =3D 4096" line is present in the System.ini file.
RESOLUTION
To resolve the problem, use one of the following methods.=20
Ifshlp.sys File Missing from Windows Folder
If the Ifshlp.sys file is missing from the Windows folder, extract a=20
new copy of the file from your original Windows floppy disks or CD-
ROM to the Windows folder.=20

The Config.sys File Points to a Previous Version of the Ifshlp.sys=20
File
Windows 95

Restart your computer. When you view the "Starting Windows 95"=20
message, press F8, and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only=20
option from the Startup menu.=20

Windows 98

Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer=20
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe=20
Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Startup menu.=20
Use a text editor (such as Edit.com) to open the Config.sys file.=20
Delete the line that loads the Ifshlp.sys file. Note that Windows=20
automatically loads this driver when you start your computer.=20
Save and then close the Config.sys file.=20
Restart your computer.=20
Ifshlp.sys Statement Was Deleted from the Config.sys File After You=20
Reinstalled Windows
When you reinstall Windows, the Ifshlp.sys statement is deleted from=20
the Config.sys file and it is not replaced. To add the Ifshlp.sys=20
statement to the Config.sys file:=20
Windows 95

Restart your computer. When you view the "Starting Windows 95"=20
message, press F8, and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only=20
option from the Startup menu.=20

Windows 98

Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer=20
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe=20
Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Startup menu.=20
Use a text editor (such as Edit.com) to open the Config.sys file.=20
Type the following line in the Config.sys file:
DEVICE=3DC:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys=20

Save and then close the Config.sys file.=20
Restart your computer.=20
Incorrect [Paths] Section in the Msdos.sys File
Windows 95

Restart your computer. When you view the "Starting Windows 95"=20
message, press F8, and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only=20
option from the Startup menu.=20

Windows 98

Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer=20
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe=20
Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Startup menu.=20
Type the following command at a command prompt:
attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys=20

Use a text editor (such as Edit.com) to open the Msdos.sys file.=20
Verify that the following lines in the Msdos.sys file are correct=20
[Paths] WinDir=3DWindows WinBootDir=3DWindows HostWinBootDrv=3DC where=20
Windows is the folder that contains Windows. Note that if you are=20
using disk compression software, you must change the drive letter in=20
the HostWinBootDrv=3D line to the drive letter of the host drive.=20
Save and then close the Msdos.sys file.=20
Type the following line at a command prompt:
attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys=20

Restart your computer.=20
Winboot.ini File Present in the Root Folder of the Boot Drive
Windows 95

Restart your computer. When you view the "Starting Windows 95"=20
message, press F8, and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only=20
option from the Startup menu.=20

Windows 98

Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer=20
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe=20
Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Startup menu.=20
Type deltree winboot.ini at a command prompt to delete the=20
Winboot.ini file in the root folder of the boot drive, and then press=20
ENTER.=20
Restart your computer.=20
There Is a "maxfilecache =3D 4096" Line in the System.ini File
Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file in=20
the Windows folder. Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of=20
the "maxfilecache =3D 4096" line, save the file, close the file, and=20
then restart your computer.=20
