Thanks, NETBIOS is enabled at the workstation level, however it does not
work across different subnets, right?

Have you activly disabled Netbios on all workstations and servers, or just not configured it?
Windows 2003, and windows xp still assume the use and config of Netbios first in it's efforts to communicate with other windows systems, unless you go out of your way to disable it, which greatly changes the way file shares are accessed. (no more UNC pathing).
SRV records in DNS should make no difference. This is a netbios thing.
So, short answer to your original question. With what you've explained of your setup, what you're seeing is fine. With no netbios control in your domain you'll be spelling out the FQDN of the domain so machines can find the records they need in DNS and can join properly w/ the child domain. It's not wrong really, just the nature of a setup lacking a WINS server to answer Netbios querries for the domain.

We are not utilizing WINS, so does that mean NETBIOS does not work across different subnets? What about adding SRV record entries for the child domain's shortname?
