It was one of my engineers using me as a fileserver! Still no joy then. I've allowed a few updates just in case it's actually working but nothing has happened yet. The Update system still appears disabled, although the service is running. Is LocalSystem a suitable logon account for the service? Does it need to be an account with "proper" network access? -----Original Message----- From: Angus Macdonald [mailto:Angus.Macdonald@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 27 January 2004 14:26 To: windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] Re: Windows update service is unavailable. Why? I've edited my local policy like you suggested. The settingsa re all now in and I've restarted the service. The control panel applet still thinks the service is unavailable but nevertheless my machine has started doing something quite demanding. We'll see what it was when it finishes I suppose . -----Original Message----- From: Martin, Eddie [mailto:EMartin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 27 January 2004 13:48 To: 'windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [windows2000] Re: Windows update service is unavailable. Why? Have you tried using gpedit.msc from the Start-Run menu? Once this opens, right-click on the Administrative Tools menu and then Add Template. If you browse you will see a template called wuau.au or something to that effect. Add that templete and then once you come out of that window, open Administrative Tools, click Windows Components, and under it you will see Windows components. You can add all of your settings here. Why? I'm in the process of implementing MS SUS to blow the cobwebs out of my W2K machines. The server is setup, has finished synchronising and is waiting for connections. However on every machine I've tried, the Windows Update Service is unavailable, according to the control panel applet. I have ensured that the Automatic Updates service is running and have manually entered the server details in the registry before service and server restarts but the control panel applet still insists that the service is unavilable. I can't even find the applet on my new XP SP1 laptop. Am I going mad or have I missed something along the way?
