Thanks to those who responded. In the end, I had to give up because even
the latest Dell bios on that machine can't handle SCSI and IDE hard drives
simultaneously.
I simply moved the new drive to an old underutilized server that behaves.
It does mean that those backups are over the network, but I can live with
that.
