I don't have any GPOs in place yet as I'm only testing but all the machines
I've tried have been W2k SP3 or 4 and XP SP1. Strangely, the Windows Update
tab is missing from my system properties page, although the service is
running.

You should deploy the SUS Klient in the same GPO wich deplays the settings.
You should also make the SUS Client service startup trough taht service.
This wil autoinstall the client for all pre sp3 computers.
The client is shipped with XP SP1 and W2K SP3.

In 2000 you find the client in controlpanel, but in xp you find the client
in the system part of the controlpanel.

I'm in the process of implementing MS SUS to blow the cobwebs out of my W2K
machines. The server is setup, has finished synchronising and is waiting for
connections. However on every machine I've tried, the Windows Update Service
is unavailable, according to the control panel applet. I have ensured that
the Automatic Updates service is running and have manually entered the
server details in the registry before service and server restarts but the
control panel applet still insists that the service is unavilable. I can't
even find the applet on my new XP SP1 laptop.

Am I going mad or have I missed something along the way? Answers on a post
card please ;-)
