No, there is a lot of services etc that is beeing configured in DNS when you
set up an Active Directory. Its not just a computername/ip lookup service.

When you install AD a file is beeing created, with all the DNS records you
need. You have to import this file into the BIND DNS service. I really cant
remember the name of this file.

I have read that BIND version 8.12 and higher is preferd for BIND DNS hosting
AD.

I don't know the suggested best method other than to use Active Directory
Integrated DNS but if you want to do DNS from a non Windows host just point
all the computers to the IP address of the DNS server(s) to resolve DNS
names.

This can be done on each workstation or via DHCP in DHCP assigned IP
addresses.

Servers should have static IP addresses so the DNS server would be
identified in the IP configuration for each server.

Subject: [windows2000] AD & DNS

Has anyone implemented Active Directory while still supplying DNS from a
UNIX host? Was this done by simply pointing the workstations to the IP of
the DNS hosts or was this a mixed mode implementation whereby the Domain
Controllers serve DNS but retrieve it first from the UNIX host?

What is the suggested best method for setting this up while keeping the
UNIX DNS host?

Thanks,
