You ping server1.domain1.com and get the proper response and ping server1 and your computers are trying to ping 192.168.0.20 instead of 192.168.1.20. That old ip address is coming from somewhere. Entries in the arp table only stay there for a few minutes. Does this server have more than one network card? That item always pops up in Browser problem solution on microsoft.com but they say it was fixed with sp2 or sp3. I still think there is a lmhosts file out there somewhere or someone used arp to enter a static wins address. All other servers on both domains work great. It is just this ONE server that is giving problems. Although I think WINS is the problem I think WINS is the problem because that ONE server is not sending the signal to the WINS server. The browser keeps crashing on that ONE server. If the broswer is crashing then could it be assumed that something isn't being sent to the WINS server and therefore the WINS isn't getting the IP information? The Wins server on a different subnet has no way of knowing about any windows computer names in that other sub-net. My WINS Server doesn't have an entry for the server I'm having problems connecting to across domains. I could do a static one but I would rather have this thing do it naturally. I've tried pings all over the place and it doesn't change anything. I've messed with arp and nbtstat. Any ideas. Look for them on both computers and Servers. You can just do a search for a file named hosts and that will locate both the lmhosts and hosts files. They are text files and do not have any extension so the one that ends in .sam is just a sample lmhosts file. The entries that were causing me problems were left over from the WinNT4.0 network I upgraded and were pointing to servers that were Domain Controllers and Backup Domain Controllers that are now just servers. I kept the names because I liked them but the hosts file was preloading the names as domain controllers to contact to log in. Seemed a good idea at the time but now DNS makes that unnecessary and sometimes (this case) problematic. Jennifer gave the normal location for win2k %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\etc. Douglas Jensen Douglas.Jensen@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Voice (952) 402-9821 Fax (952) 402-9815 Network Administrator Scott Carver Dakota CAP Agency, Inc. 712 Canterbury Road Shakopee, MN 55379 www.capagency.org -----Original Message----- From: Berger, Gunnar [mailto:GBerger@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, March 15, 2004 11:26 AM To: windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] Re: Resubneting WHere would I look for hosts files? Also, I figured out that I have some major Brower problems that is causing this. Any thoughts on this. I'm using some online techincal DB trying to get this thing to work. I changed IP addressing on our network and had intermittent problems with some computers. Turned out to be hosts files that I didn't really need that had old information in them. Now I'm having a problem with people from one domain getting access to servers on the other domain. But it isn't a domain issue because the same problem exists for people in the same domain that are running Win98. If I try to access one server it just straight up doesn't work from Win98 or across a domain. I'm about positive this is a WINS issue but I don't understand why 2000 would be using WINS to resolve. More detail: Win2k machine on Domain2 trying to access server1 on Domain1 when I ping, server1.domain1.com I get proper responce 192.168.1.20, when I ping server1 I get improper responce 192.168.0.20. This is the old IP address. I don't remember how to flush the arp table, I did a "arp -a" and I don't even see the entry. The problem is people log into the Citrix server from all domains, their network drive is mapped, but the Citrix server won't map the network drive of a server across the subnet. This is a pretty major issue. Gunnar ******************************************************** This Weeks Sponsor StressedPuppy.com Games Feeling stressed out?
