Not exactly a Novell term - I first heard it while programming an IBM 360-H40 in the late 60s... Just means Abnormal Ending (to a compile, for example). We had a "programmer" who could consistently get a "D" level compile error, and that would ring the bell! Named him "Abend Al"...
