Would anybody know if linux can do this somehow?

I'm thinking maybe setting up a linux server and using samba to allow
the win-clients access to it, may do the trick. According to preliminary
data (read as a short talk with the linux-admin over here while getting
coffee [it's amazing how many interesting things and breakthroughs
happen while getting coffee and/or happen around the coffee machine...]
8-) samba may offer this service.
