Here are my 2 cents Let me know what you think? The first thing that needs to be done when doing Disaster Recovery Planning is to make sure that you have documented everything on your network. I MEAN EVERYTHING. This documentation should include all hardware, software and how everything is configured. Should the need arise a systems administrator who has never worked on your network should be able to get it up and running. In the shortest possible time. The next thing to decide is, in the case of a disaster, what are the mission critical applications? What needs to be brought back first? THIS DECISION SHOULD NOT ME MADE BY IT; IT SHOULD BE MADE BY TOP MANAGEMENT. By this I mean that everybody believes that there application, server or whatever is the most important thing and should be brought back first. What has to be decided is what best for the business? Other questions that need to be asked are: Contact information for hardware/software vendors needs to be documented. Contact information of the users at your business they will need to be informed of any changes. How will hardware be replaced? How long will it take to get backups from offsite storage to your office or temporary office? How long will it take to recover a given system? Where will the disaster recovery plan be stored? (A copy should be stored offsite, maybe with the backups.) What will happen to the phone systems? Will numbers have to be diverted? Will temporary offices be used? Staff will have to be informed of this. The next thing to do is to test your plan on a fairly regular basis. This has a number of benefits. It allows the systems administrators to improve there skills in recovering different systems. Plans can then be adapted accordingly. It also allows the users to know how long it will take to restore a specific application.
