was wondering if anyone has some experience using DFS to syncronize directories across a pair of machines. The issue is that each of these folders has about 12GB of small (150K or less) document files. In one of our out of state server farms, I am adding a new file server to take the main storage of the documents off of the primary database server, where they are sitting now. We basically need an instant failover for the documents in case the server decides to die. What I'm wondering is does anyone know how the sync operation within DFS actually works (or can point me to) an in depth explanation on how it works? Is it a byte for byte copy, or does it just monitor changes between the 2 folders and copy appropriately. I know there are commercial applications that look at just the file deltas and copy appropriately, but if DFS will work, I'd rather implement that solution. I've been looking around on the net and I can't really come up with anything useful. Currently, there is some freeware app that a predecessor of mine installed that basically does a software RAID1 across the shares. It's not as CPU and disk hungry as the original robocopy solution, but it still eats up about 25-35% usage at times on an 8-way xeon box. I'm heading down in a few weeks to set this up, and I need to have a plan of action in place beforehand. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks, -brian Brian Anderson Serapis Support Correctional Medical Service Office (314)919-9868 Mobile (314)239-1398 banderson@xxxxxxxxxx http://www.serapisonline.com ******************************************************** This Weeks Sponsor StressedPuppy.com Games Feeling stressed out?
