Hi List,

Just an update on the Classic Stream referred to in this thread. I checked
it again just now (2:49 PM EDT--about 12 hours later) and I'm still having
the tremendous break-up problem. I wonder if the 256 bit stream is too high
quality for Winamp?

Hi Curtis and Others,

I tried this stream. It sounds wonderful--when it's not breaking up. I
listened to it for about 2 minutes and it kept breaking up every 4 or 5
seconds. When it wasn't broken, it really did sound like CD quality
fidelity. I bookmarked it and I'll check it tomorrow and see if it's still
breaking up. I wonder what kind of bandwidth it has--how many people can
log onto it without the server becoming swamped and sluggish.

It seems to me that there is a problem maybe with the server since we're
buffering a lot, maybe they're not sending as rapidly as they usually do
because of net congestion? It's a beautiful stream!

The following problem was noted for the first time yesterday when listening
to
Maxradio a 256 bit stream. Its url is http//195.228.156.38:8036
I am using a Dell Dimension 4600 and jaws 5.10. I have a dsl connection over
a
phone line and the transfer bit rate is usually about 180 kbps. The thing is
that I was able to listen to this stream in prior versions of winamp with
only
occasional brief buffering problems that cause a bit of breaking up in the
stream.
In winamp 5.05, however, the break-up rate is like staccato bursts of a
second
or two in duration and I loose my speech. In fact, I lose all control of the
machine--i.e. the machine freezes. Even narrator doesn't work. Alt-f-4 fails
to
turn off the machine and a soft reboot also fails leaving no option but a
hard
reboot. Even then there is a message on screen that says something like
programs
task manager, this program is not responding etc. click here to cancel or
quit
to end now. Also, I was presented with a calendar on the screen which was
impossible to leave.
Fixes: I reinstalled 5.05. Classic skins only were selected. Agent was not
selected.
After the reinstall, I could open only 3 windows: library, equalizer and
play
editor. Alt-w failed to open main window--main window closed and it did not
appear in the control-tab rotation.
Finally, and here is the strangest--All I had to do was go to the library
window
and bookmarks and even though I was at smooth jaz--the first in my list,
Maxradio -- the fourth in the list would begin playing even though I had not
touched any keys and of course everything was frozen again.
Only after going back to 5.04 is the problem solved.
Other streams do appear to work in 5.05--just this 256 bit stream but as I
say
it works fine in 5.04.
Any ideas re this very strange behaviour would be appreciated. Maxradio is
one
of my favs--both for its sound quality and music selection.
