We have obtained some clarification regarding the curb work that is being done on Sussex for those interested. Hopefully, the bullets below will answer all or most of the questions that residents have asked. * This work was initiated because the county, through routine road inspections, determined that portions of curbs in the 600 block of Sussex had deteriorated to the point that they met their criteria for replacement. * Even though there might have been some areas of Sussex where the curbs were fine, in certain cases, it is more economical for the county to replace all curbs at the same time which is why the entire street is being done. * There are no other streets in Wiltondale planned for this same type of work at this time * The Wiltondale Improvement Association was not informed ahead of time by the county that this work was going to take place so we were not able to provide residents with advanced notice. * Regarding the solicitation of sidewalk and driveway repairs. If there is no grass strip between the curb and the sidewalk, the contractor is supposed to repair any sidewalk sections that need it without cost to the homeowner. The same is true for any deteriorating concrete driveway aprons that tie into the curbs. If there is a grass strip between the curb and the sidewalk, then the cost of repairs to the sidewalk lies with the homeowner and it has been Baltimore County's practice in the past to allow their contractors to ask homeowners if they want this work done for a fee. Due to the confusion in our case, the contractors have been instructed to no longer offer this option to residents on Sussex. If your sidewalk requires repairs, you may still ask the contractor for an estimate to make the repairs, but understand that he is now not permitted to make the repairs in conjunction with the curb repairs. He will have to return and perform the work at a later date. He said that he has directed the contractor to tell his workers to stop soliciting, but it appears that this practice is continuing. If a worker persists in seeking payment for repairs, residents may want to call Tom Hargis directly at (410) 887-3560.
