Dear Whitman Families and Friends,

As you may have become aware, the School Board for San Diego Unified has
voted and approved the process of closing 10 schools.  Here are some
information that you may not be aware of and that you can find on
www.sandi.net.  The School Board is projecting that by closing 10 schools
it'll save about $4 - $5 million dollars (total).  San Diego Unified School
District is one of the only school districts in the country that has not
closed a school during this fiscal crisis.  There are 11 clusters that are
being asked to recommend a school to close or reassign.  Whitman Elementary
has made it on the list as being part of the Madison Cluster.  You as a
parent, community member, or staff can make a difference by showing your
support at the next Madison cluster meeting which is on October 10 at 5:30
pm at the Madison High School.

Principal Pam Thompson would like respectful support, based upon the special
programs available at Whitman and with students in mind. Parents from every
school may speak about how much they love their school site and teachers.
However, Whitman Elementary has specialized programs that provides good
reasons for taking Whitman off that list which includes the following: 

Ruben H Fleet partnership
UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering partnership
SDGE partnership
FLASH Grant funding for K-2
Specialized equipment for our DHH students
30,000 sound booth just installed for our DHH students
Rose Canyon Partnership
Annie's Art School
Instrumental Music Program
Music Program

Whitman Elementary is also in the process of becoming the first STEM
elementary school in this area. 

Show your support for Whitman Elementary by keeping in mind what Whitman
Elementary has to offer to not only the students currently at Whitman
Elementary but to what Whitman Elementary has to offer to the community.
Help support Whitman by attending the next Madison Cluster meeting so we can
let everyone know that what we want is to keep Whitman Elementary and we
want to keep Whitman around forever.

Here's just some friendly reminders on what is happening at Whitman:

West Coast Fundraiser
The fundraiser is on and all order forms are due by next Thursday, October
13, 2011.  The deadline for online orders is October 20, 2011.

Picture Day
Have your student dress his or her best and a smile for picture day on this
Thursday, October 6.  You do not have to send in money with your child, a
proof along with an order form will be sent home later.

Academic Assembly
October 7, 2011 on the Blacktop, 9:10 am

Steve Spellman Magic Spectacular
October 22, 2011
Showtime - 6 pm
Whitman PTA is planning on starting festivities around 5 pm.  Please check
your child's backpack for flyers as Whitman PTA be accepting donations for
themed baskets to be presented for silent auctions.  If you are interested
in helping at this event, contact the Whitman PTA.

Mission Federal
Banking Day - Every Wednesday
Mission Federal is a business partner for Whitman Elementary and they can
use volunteers to help with banking day except for on the first Wednesday of
the month as that is when they accept applications for new accounts.  If
your child has an account, don't forget to send your child in with monies to
make a deposit.  If you are interested in helping on banking day, please
contact Whitman PTA for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities:
If you are a parent and is interested in being a part of the Whitman PTA
board, we are looking for parent reps for pre-school and K-6 grades.  As a
parent rep for the grade, you will serve as a liaison and provide useful
insight as to what that grade is participating in.  The Whitman PTA Board
meets at a minimum once a month.

Fundraising Chairperson:  Whitman PTA Board is looking for a volunteer to
serve as the Fundraising Chairperson who will be primarily responsible for
coordinating Whitman PTA sponsored fundraisers.  PTA units are allowed up to
3 fundraisers throughout the school year, there are at most two more
opportunities. 

Webmaster:  Whitman PTA website needs to be updated on a regular basis and
the Whitman PTA board is looking for a volunteer who can give us a little
extra help in uploading and updating content to the website.
