Here's an update from Ann Marie Haney on the effort to restore VAPA funding
in San Diego Unified so all children have equal access to music instruction.

A Message from Ann Marie Haney, Community Council for Music in the Schools
Dear School Music Supporters,
Thank you for your letters and calls in support of school music. Last
Tuesday the Board of Education members postponed the vote on the preliminary
budget for 2012-2013 to Tuesday, January 31 at 4:00 pm. Please note - the
meeting starts at 4:00 pm, an hour earlier than usual.
Board members were concerned the 50% proposed reduction in the Visual and
Performing Arts Department (VAPA) would eliminate music instruction in
numerous elementary schools. Students would not have equal access to this
essential curriculum. The Board is committed to equal access for all
students.
The arts are about participation. We are at risk for becoming mere
spectators as others sing our songs for us and paint our pictures. We are
left with no avenues for our own creative expression.
Please continue your advocacy efforts.
