Straw and Palm-leaf Hat Industry in New England:
Talk and Straw Weaving Exhibit at the Wendell Library
Local historian and long time Royalston Library Director, Kathy Morris,
will be at the Wendell Free Library on Friday, September 23rd at 7:00 pm to
give a unique presentation on the history and evolution of the straw and
palm-leaf hat weaving industry in New England. While covering New England
she will focus locally including the introduction of palm-leaf plaiting in
Wendell. Palm-leaf weaving was a substantial source of income for many area
households and homesteads from the late 1700s through the early 1900s.
In addition, Morris, an accomplished artist in straw weaving, will also
talk about the history of straw weaving from Rapunzel, to marquetry,
embroidery, the use of straw in the furniture and fashion industry to, of
course, the use of straw for hats. Morris will have on hand examples of
various weaving techniques as well as the tools and wheat varieties used in
creating woven straw art. Morris is a board member of the National
Association of Wheat Weavers and a member of the Guild of Straw Craftsmen
in the United Kingdom and has been weaving straw for over 15 years. She and
her husband Larry Siegel have lived in Royalston for 40 years where they
have raised four sons and maintained a small family farm growing most of
their food. As library director for the town of Royalston, Morris enjoys
pointing out that, their building, the Phinehas S. Newton Library, was
built with funds Newton made from his palm-leaf hat business.
During the months of September and October an exhibit of Kathy Morris'
woven art will be on display in the Herrick Room Art Gallery at the Wendell
Free Library.
Please join us for this presentation on a little known aspect of our local
history and on an ancient and enduring art form. The presentation which
includes a Power Point is free and open to all.
