Jun 4: Ladybug Tea!

The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Alliance announces the 6th annual "Ladybug Tea" party!

Sunday, June 4th at 1:00 until 3:30pm
Wil-O-Way Underwood Recreation Center
10602 Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa

The party was first scheduled for May 13; however, this date was difficult for many people, so we hope the postponement makes it

easier for more who wish to attend.

Who comes to the Ladybug Tea?
It is for mothers who are hearing to bring their daughters who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
It is for mothers who are Deaf or hard of hearing to bring their daughters who are Deaf, hard of hearing or hearing.
Families may also invite hearing siblings, grandmothers, aunts and dear friends.
Boys, accompanied by their moms, can come too.


Our theme this year is "It's Fun to be Fancy"
If you can wear something sparkly, frilly, feminine and fun, please do! Purses, scarves, feathers and bling are definitely appropriate!

Summer Activities at the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Preschool Dramatic Storytelling Group for Ages 3 to 5
Wednesdays, 12:30 – 2:30 PM
June 21 through July 26

Your young d/Deaf or hard of hearing children will love this popular summer activity that involves role playing, storytelling, hands-on activities and art projects based on children’s stories. A fun and creative way to facilitate speech, language and auditory goals and concept development. Enrollment is limited. Early registration is recommended.

Fee: $145 per child

Parent and Child Sign Class, ages 4 to 8
Mondays, 12:30 - 1:30PM
June 19 through July 31 (no class July 3)

You and your child can learn American Sign Language (ASL) together in this special class designed to make learning sign language fun. No books necessary – you will learn signs by participating in activities, singing songs and telling stories.

Fee: $30 for one parent and child
$10 for each additional child

Mondays, 2:00 - 3:00 PM
June 19 through July 31 (no class July 3)

Looking for a fun summer activity for your child? This beginner’s American Sign Language (ASL) class is for kids ages 9 through 14. They will learn basic vocabulary through special projects, games and social activities.

Fee: $30 per child

If you’ve been curious about American Sign Language (ASL), here’s your chance to learn basic vocabulary, use of expression and fingerspelling. Plus, you’ll be introduced to Deaf culture. 8 three-hour sessions.

Thursday evenings, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
June 15 through August 3

If you have completed a beginning sign course at CDHH or elsewhere, this class is for you. You will develop vocabulary and basic conversation skills. Learn more about how to interact with Deaf adults. 8 three-hour sessions.

Fee: $85 per student

New Sign Class Just Added!

Communicating with Kids in Sign II will be held on Tuesdays, June 13 through August 8 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, 10243 W. National Avenue in West Allis. This 8-week sign language class is for parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, babysitters and any adult who needs to communicate in sign language with a young child. If you have completed the Level I course at CDHH or have taken beginning sign language instruction elsewhere, this class is for you.

The CDHH Big Buddy/Little Buddy Mentoring Program is designed to unite youth with hearing loss and their families by providing opportunities for social connections and role models.

The next Big Buddy/Little Buddy event will take place at the CDHH Annual Picnic in the Park on Sunday, July 16, from Noon until 3:00 PM at the Root River Parkway, Site 2 in Milwaukee. The theme for this event is “Game Time”, and Big Buddies will lead Little Buddies in a variety of fun outdoor games and activities.

Join Us for Family Learning Vacation 2006
The CDHH Family Learning Vacation (FLV) 2006, will take place August 18 through August 20 at the Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI. This year’s theme is “Making Magic: Going Beyond the Expected.” Join us for this statewide weekend retreat, where you’ll join other families with d/Deaf or hard of hearing children for a variety of workshops and opportunities for family fun. Make new friends, share experiences, and participate in informative programs. Located near Stevens Point, the Lions Camp has 400 acres of forests, trails, native wildlife and a private lake – the perfect setting for a family vacation. The featured presenter for FLV 2006 is Dr. Asiah Mason from Gallaudet University, who will speak about the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and how to go beyond the expected with your child.

2006 Summer Institute at UW-Milwaukee CANCELLED

The 2006 ASL Summer Institute at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee has been cancelled due to lack of participation. We were reluctant to cancel our program in its first year, but we are hopeful that we have sparked interest and will be able to offer the ASL Summer Institute next year.

If you are interested in receiving your license to teach ASL as a foreign language, we are happy to announce that beginning in the fall semester of 2006, UWM will offer a certification program. This ASL Teacher Certification Program will lead to a regular license from the Department of Public Instruction. Information about this certification program will be available this summer.

Nov 3-4: CDHH Used Book Sale Fundraiser - Donations Needed

Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Seeking Donations of Used Books and Videos
The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CDHH) will be holding its first annual used book sale on November 3 and 4, 2006, at its headquarters located at 10243 W. National Avenue in West Allis. The Center is currently seeking donations of gently used books, videos, or DVD’s, to include in this sale. Donations to CDHH are tax deductible and may be dropped off at CDHH during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Arrangements can also be made to have donated items picked up from your home or business.


Volunteers are also needed for this event, to pick-up, sort and price donated materials in advance. Individuals interested in volunteering to help with this event, or who wish to donate materials can call 414-604-7210 (Voice) / 888-742-7651 (TTY) or e-mail akelchen@xxxxxxxx for more information.

All proceeds from this fundraising event will go to support the many programs and services provided by CDHH for children and adults with hearing loss in Wisconsin. It offers a full range of services and technologies to enhance the quality of life for individuals with hearing loss.
