Deaf Coffee Chat events have become very popular in many places around the United States. However, in Wisconsin, there are only a few places listed on this website: http://www.deafcoffee.com/html/wisconsin.html and it is surprising there is none in Milwaukee or Waukesha area.

Sep 13: Registration Deadline for CDHH Fall Classes

FALL CLASSES AT THE CENTER FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING

-Speechreading and Communication Strategies

-American Sign Language I

-American Sign Language II

-American Sign Language III

-Communicating with Kids in Sign

The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is offering a series of eight speechreading and communication strategies classes beginning Thursday, September 14. Classes will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the Center, which is located at 10243 W. National Avenue in West Allis. This class series is designed for anyone who is hard of hearing as well as their friends and family members who would like to learn more about communicating effectively. These small group classes are led by Pamela Bergum, M.S., CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist who has worked with individuals with hearing loss at the Center for more than twenty years. The fee is $84 for the eight classes. For more information or to register for the courses, call CDHH at 414-604-7212. Class size is limited. Early registration is recommended.

The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is also accepting registrations for upcoming American Sign Language (ASL) classes to be held at the Center, located 10243 W. National Avenue in West Allis. The fee for each ASL class series is $85 plus text, and all classes run for 12 sessions.

· ASL I will be held on Wednesdays, September 20 through December 6, and is being offered in two sections to reduce class size. Students may choose to take ASL I from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM or from 6:45 PM to 8:45 PM. Instructor: Leah Simmons.

· ASL II will continue to build vocabulary and conversation skills for those individuals who have previously taken a beginning sign language course. ASL II will be held on Tuesdays, September 19 through December 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Instructor: Katie Voss.

· ASL III is for more advanced ASL students who have already completed ASL I and ASL II courses. ASL II will be held on Wednesdays, September 20 through December 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Instructor: Katie Voss.

The Center is also offering “Communicating with Kids in Sign,” a family sign language class specifically designed for parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, babysitters and any adult who needs to communicate in sign language with a young child. This 10-week class series will be held at the Center on Tuesday evenings beginning September 19 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The fee for this class series is $55 for the first family member and $45 for each additional family member.

Sep 14 & 15: Public Input Sessions for Persons with Disabilities

We Need to Hear from You!!!!

Every three years, the Independent Living Council of Wisconsin develops a plan for addressing the independent living needs of persons with disabilities in Wisconsin. This plan is called the State Plan for Independent Living (“SPIL”). This plan helps to develop priorities for disability advocates, policy-makers and others who are working to improve the ability of persons with disabilities to live in the community.

IndependenceFirst is hosting two public meetings to gather input from persons with disabilities about their needs and ideas/suggestions. At these sessions, we will be focusing on topics such as housing, employment, disability-related services, benefits/health care services, transportation, education, disability rights, assistive technology, and others. Persons of all different types of disabilities are encouraged to attend!

Oct 28: Women's Convocation hosted by Milwaukee Archdiocese

An invitation to all women to an Archdiocesan Convocation for Women.

This is an opportunity to get together for support and resources for all of our spiritual needs.

The guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Trinette McCray, will talk about “Celebrating the gifts among us: Gathering women of Faith”. Interpreters will be provided.

We will be breaking into small groups and there will be a table for all Deaf to sit together and discuss two topics:
“What gifts has God given me?”
and
“How can I best use these gifts in my daily life?”

Nov 3-4: CDHH Used Book Sale Fundraiser - Donations Needed

Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Seeking Donations of Used Books and Videos

The Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CDHH) will be holding its first annual used book sale on November 3 and 4, 2006, at its headquarters located at 10243 W. National Avenue in West Allis. The Center is currently seeking donations of gently used books, videos, or DVD’s, to include in this sale. Donations to CDHH are tax deductible and may be dropped off at CDHH during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Arrangements can also be made to have donated items picked up from your home or business.

Volunteers are also needed for this event, to pick-up, sort and price donated materials in advance. Individuals interested in volunteering to help with this event, or who wish to donate materials can call 414-604-7210 (Voice) / 888-742-7651 (TTY) or e-mail akelchen@xxxxxxxx for more information.
