Oct 1: PRESS RELEASE: Call for Nominations
Call for Nominations
"Deaf Individuals of Distinction in Today¹s American Workforce"
This photojournalism project will result in the publication of a book of
images and self-descriptive prose as well as a photographic exhibit for
display in galleries and institutions. The project will profile 100
unique Deaf individuals in the United States who embody the essence of
leadership, social advancement and innovation in addressing social,
educational, economic, technological and political issues at local,
national, and international levels. This project is the first in a
series illustrating the contemporary impact of Deaf individuals in
shaping America¹s future.
Profiles will be drawn from across the United States to represent
diverse social, economic, educational and political backgrounds and
walks of life. The photos and text will provide a real-life view of
their uniqueness, including their roles as pioneers, philanthropists,
and "one-of-a-kind" shapers of our society.
Darren Frazier, an emerging Deaf professional photographer, will lead
the project across the U.S., photographing the selected 100 Deaf
individuals and capturing images that illustrate their impact in today¹s
workforce. The guiding belief that propels this project is that by
telling compelling stories for the book and gallery exhibitions we can:
- Shatter the myths held by many people about the ability of the Deaf to
truly make a difference at local, national and international levels,
- Strengthen the historical record of the deaf minority with
contemporary depictions.
- Energize a silent revolution among Deaf people to believe that they
can succeed in uncharted workforce waters.
You may nominate up to 3 people including yourself. The nominee must
have a hearing loss that requires his/her participation in society as a
member of the Deaf minority and must exhibit one or more of the following:
- Be publicly perceived as a positive role model and demonstrate
excellence and leadership in her/his workplace and chosen field.
- Have documented achievements that have made or are making an impact at
local, national or international levels.
- Have been the first or a primary pioneer in entering a field of work
or initiating a positive contribution to the public image of the Deaf
and created conditions that elevated levels of respect for Deaf
individuals in the mainstream workforce.
- Have shown courage in public life and public service and involvement
that represents a basic faith in the potential of all humanity.
For each nomination the following information must be provided.
- One-page description addressing the selection criteria and general bio
information.
- Paragraph statement of why you believe this person should be selected.
- Contact information for the nominee and nominator.
There are no limitations related to the nominee's social, economic or
political status, age, language, education and/or literacy skills.
The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2006. Completed nomination(s)
must be sent via e-mail: df@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Deaf Dog in need of a Loving Home
Gypsy, 11 year old, Deaf, Beagle in need of a loving adoptive family.
Previous owner has passed away. Gypsy is currently staying with a Wisconsin
foster family for a beagle rescue group. Current foster mom is an
interpreter and is working to develop sign and gesture communication with
Gypsy. Gypsy is responding very well!! Gypsy's foster mom would really
like to see Gypsy get adopted by a person/family that knows sign and
will be
able to continue visual communication with her. Gypsy's personally has
been so positively affected by just a few signs and gestures!!
For being 11 years old Gypsy is in wonderful health and gets along great
with the current family dog, cats and kids in the neighborhood. She loves
to walk, romp in the yard and take long naps. A wonderful cuddler and
great dog to have in a family.
