On Thursday, April 19, the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be hosting a panel discussion entitled “Communication Options for Your d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing Child.” This discussion will explore Manual Communication Options for children and the panel will include d/Deaf and hard of hearing adults and parents of d/Deaf and hard of hearing children. Meet successful users of varying communication approaches, learn from other’s experiences and gain more insight into what choices might work for your child and family.

Communicating with Kids in Sign

This sign language class is for parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, babysitters and any adult who needs to communicate in sign language with a young child. The focus is on vocabulary and basic sign language communication used in the day-to-day lives of deaf and hard of hearing infants/toddlers and their families. Your instructor, Tricia Condon, is deaf and has extensive experience working with deaf and hard of hearing children as the Program Assistant for the Kellogg Child and Family Program at CDHH. Cost is $55 and $45 for each additional family member. The book Signing for Kids is recommended and available at CDHH. Registration and payment must be received one week before the start of class.

Be sure to save the Date for Family Learning Vacation 2007, which will take place at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI, August 17-19. Family Learning Vacation (FLV) is an annual event sponsored by the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where families with d/Deaf and hard of hearing children from all over the state get together for a weekend of fun, friendship and interesting workshops. FLV has become a tradition for many families in Wisconsin, so please mark your calendars and take advantage of this special experience this August 17-19.

We’re also looking for volunteers with a strong interest in working with d/Deaf and hard of hearing children to help with activities throughout the weekend.
