To Rehabilitation Therapists and others on freelist,
You may be interested in induction cooking (not to be confused with convection cooking) as an alternate to gas or electric stove top burners. Apparently induction units have been used in Europe quite a bit but are becoming popular in this country. Target is selling a single unit or one burner for $139 dollars. They are not in the stores yet but can be purchased on line. A whole stove top with induction burners is way too expensive for many of our clients but the single unit is more reasonable given its safety.

The induction cook top generates heat with a magnetic force. Iron skillets, stainless steel pots and enamel ware must be used. The surface only gets hot when a pan is placed on it. It only gets hot where the pan touches the surface. This eliminates centering the pan exactly on a burner and is easier for some students that have spatial problems. Elders whose vision is not reliable may be more comfortable with this kind of cooking when they just want to heat some soup. It is possible to place your fingers or hands directly on the area surrounding the pan without feeling heat.

The settings can be marked with bump-dots. The cook top responds very quickly and accurately when set for high, medium or low. One caveat is that the cook top should not be used with those who have pacemakers.

Controls have audible sounds (beeps) when they are used. Food cooking time can be set and the cook top will turn off by itself when the cooking time expires. If someone accidently forgets to turn it off, it will turn off by itself in one minute.

I would be interested in your comments....Ellie Martin
