At the time of writing, Sophos has received a small number of reports of this Trojan from the wild. The Trojan displays a fake security warning in an effort to promote traffic to a specific website. Troj/Spyre-E may create registry entries under the following: HKLM\SOFTWARE\AntivirusGold Troj/Spyre-E copies itself to the Windows system folder as hookdump.exe and sets the following registry entry in order to run each time a user logs on: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Intel system tool <System>\hookdump.exe The Trojan drops a file named screen.html to the Windows folder and sets screen.html as the Desktop wallpaper. Screen.html contains fake security alerts and prompts to visit the remote website. The following text appears in the message: WARNING! YOU'RE IN DANGER! ALL YOU DO WITH COMPUTER IS STORED FOREVER IN YOUR HARD DISK. WHEN YOU VISIT SITES, SEND EMAILS... ALL YOUR ACTIONS ARE LOGGED. AND IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE THEM WITH STANDARD TOOLS. YOUR DATA IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR FORENSICS. AND IN SOME CASES FOR YOUR BOSS, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR WIFE, YOUR CHILDREN. Troj/Spyre-E also periodically displays a popup containing the following message: Your computer is infected! Protect Your Computer From Viruses.
