Joe,

You're dealing with a thing called 'tabbed browsing'. You get to these different browser tabs - in Internet Explorer version 7 or 8, and in Firefox - with a press of the control + tab keys; and there are some other ways to navigate between these tabs. the tabs are like different panes of a larger window, although each one could be a window in its own right. the idea behind them is that you can have multiple sites or instances opened in just one window. A usual way to close individual tabs is with ctrl+F4. I would therefore have that checkbox checked, so that alt+f4 closes Internet Explorer, and with that, closes all tabs as well. (you can close individual tabs without shutting internet Explorer. Ctrl+shift+t, and (maybe) ctrl+w, may do this.) In internet Explorer you're allowed to have up to eight tabs in any one window. One advantage of this system is that, instead of having just one home page, you can have several, in different tabs but all of them in one window, as aforesaid.

I hope this helps some. this isn't a tutorial, so look at the help system and also browse through the Internet Options, for more details.
