Formatting Characters 
 
 
Introduction:
You can emphasize text in a document by:
* making the text darker and heavier
* making the text slanted
* making the text larger
* different typeface (or font). 
 
One of the easiest ways to apply character formatting is to use the
Formatting toolbar. The Formatting toolbar includes buttons for applying the
most common character and paragraph formatting options.
 
Save the document attached to this tutorial and open it up in Microsoft Word
so that you can begin your lesson.
 
To activate the Bold button you can just click on the formatting toolbar. 
Screen Readers can access the bold facility by  Pressing Ctrl and B, Or by
Step 1
Select Format - Alt and O from the menu bar.    
Step 2
The first item in the drop down menu is Font and enter here.  
Step 3
Just tab once and you will hear Font Style  Box and down arrow here to Bold.
Step 4
Then click or tab to OK  and enter.
 
The Bold button on the Formatting toolbar is now highlighted in orange,
indicating that you are using bold character formatting. Anything you type
while the Bold button is highlighted will be in boldface.
 
Notice how the Bold button is still highlighted? You don't want to use bold
character formatting anymore, so...
 
Click the Bold button on the Formatting toolbar to turn off  the bold
formatting or press keys Control and B (Control and B toggles on or off Bold
formatting).
 
The Bold button on the Formatting toolbar is no longer highlighted. You can
also change the formatting of existing text by simply selecting the text and
then formatting it. Let's try selecting some text and then formatting it.
 
In the firstline  of the document, select the text - Abraham Lincoln: A
History, vol 1 
 
Now that the text has been selected, you can format it.
 
Click the Italics button on the Formatting toolbar .
 
Screen Readers:
Another way to italicize text is to press Ctrl + I.

Step 1
Select Format - Alt and O from the menu bar. 
Step 2
The first item in the drop down menu is Font  and enter on this.
Step 3
Now just tab once to the Font Style  box and down arrow to Italic.
Step 4
Click or tab to OK  and enter.
The selected text " Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1" appears in Italics.
You can verify this by doing the keystroke Insert and F.
 
Besides applying Italics and Bold to text, you can also change the font type
and font size. Let's make this heading in our document stand out more by
changing both the font and font size.
 
Now select the same text - Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1 
 
Click the Font list arrow on the formatting toolbar, then scroll to and
click Arial in the list of fonts .
 
The selected text " Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1 " appears in Arial
font. Arial and Times new Roman are two of the most commonly used fonts. 
 
Screen Readers:
Step 1
Select the text - Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1 Step 2 Press the keys
Alt and O to choose Format from the Menu Bar.
Step 3
The first item in the drop down menu is Font and enter on this.
Step 4
The first tab stop position in here is Font and you will hear Font Colon
Edit.
Step 5
Press the letter A and then down arrow to Arial.
Step 6
Now just tab to OK and enter. 
Your selected line of text is now formatted with Arial font.  Verify this by
pressing Insert and F. 
 
Next, make the font size larger.
 
Keeping the same text selected, click the Font Size list arrow on the
Formatting toolbar. Click 16 .
 
The selected text " Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1 " appears in a larger
font size
(16 point type instead of the previous 12 point type . Wow! The new font
formatting really makes the heading stand out from the rest of the document,
doesn't it? Font sizes are measured in points (pt) which are 1/72 of an
inch. The larger the number of points, the larger the font.
 
Screen Readers:
Step 1
Select the same line of text - Abraham Lincoln: A History, vol 1 Step 2
Press the Keys Alt and O to choose Format from the Menu Bar.
Step 3
Now press enter on the first item from the drop down menu which is Font.
Step 4
Tab twice and you will hear size colon edit and down arrow here to 16.
Step 5
Just tab now to OK and enter.
Your selected text has now been changed from size 12 to size 16 and this can
be verified by pressing Insert and F.
 
Now let's format the second line  - VIP_Students Formatting Document.
 
Select this line and using the formatting techniques you have learned, apply
the following font formatting to the selected heading:
Arial , Bold , and 14 pt .
 
QUICK REFERENCE
 
TO BOLD TEXT:
 
CLICK THE BOLD BUTTON ON THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR OR PRESS CTRL + B .
 
TO ITALICIZE TEXT:
 
CLICK THE ITALICS BUTTON ON THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR OR PRESS CTRL + I .
 
TO UNDERLINE TEXT:
 
CLICK THE UNDERLINE BUTTON ON THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR OR PRESS CTRL + U .
 
TO CHANGE FONT SIZE:
 
SELECT THE PT SIZE FROM THE FONT SIZE LIST ON THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR.
 
TO CHANGE FONT TYPE:
 
SELECT THE FONT FROM THE FONT LIST ON THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR.
 
Note:
These formatting features can be quickly accessed with the keystrokes
Control Shift and P.
