Text, columns and tables
With the Dolphin screen reader navigating web pages couldn’t be easier. It’s
logical!
As a page is navigated with virtual focus mode the web page automatically
scrolls, columns and tables are navigated in a meaningful order and embedded
links within text are recognised and announced.
In the section ahead we have broken the text into two columns. Users
navigating this page, either by cursoring through or by using document read,
will find the screen reader intelligently detecting the change, ensuring
speech output remains in context.
So, here we are in column 1 of these two columns. In fact, in this example,
the separation of the columns is achieved by using a table without borders.
This is a common way to separate columns on HTML pages and is used
frequently, although, this is becoming less common as alternate approaches
are growing in popularity. And, here in column two it’s worth noting
this moving through columns of text is known as logical navigation because
it’s logical! But what if you want to go to a specific piece of text on the
web page. Navigating through the page line by line can be rather time
consuming.

One of the most useful features within virtual focus mode is the find
feature. In virtual focus mode it is possible to initialise a search within
the current HTML page. The keys to perform this are F3 to initialise a
search, you then type your search criteria and then hit the ENTER key to
begin the search. Pressing F2 will search for the previous occurrence and
pressing F4 will search for the next occurrence. Once a match is found
speech will read the current line and, then if you want to navigate onwards
from that point then you can in the usual way.
For instance, try a simple search for F3 and see how easy it really is. It
is also worth noting that the search criteria entered is stored until a new
data string is entered or until Hal or Supernova is quit. This means if the
data you want to search for is the same on a variety of pages, then only the
F2 and F4 keys will be needed.
As an alternative, for mouse users the route virtual focus hot key offers
further control over the virtual focus. This feature lets you place the
virtual focus at the point where you would like to start reading. From this
point you can return to navigating in the normal virtual focus way or even
start document reading from that point. Just click and read!
The route virtual focus hot key is assigned to the middle mouse button,
however, for some this hot key may not be suitable because the mouse does
not have or cannot simulate a middle mouse button click. Under this scenario
we would recommend the hot key be re-assigned. You can re-assign any hot key
within your Dolphin software through the "Hot Keys" dialog box reached
through the "Configuration" menu. This particular action is found in the
virtual focus command set.
And finally, when navigating tables you may have noticed that tables are
also recognised and you are informed of the table style and your current row
or column positioning. In addition to this logical row navigation, it is
also possible to navigate a column by using the DOLPHIN KEY in combination
with the UP and DOWN cursor keys. You might like to try these keys out in
the table below. By default the DOLPHIN KEY is the CAPS LOCK key.
Note: if you don’t find Hal or Supernova announcing your row and column
position when navigating through a table, then this is because the verbosity
scheme is set to low. To select a higher verbosity scheme press DOLPHIN KEY
+ EQUALS.
Find, Routing and Table Navigation Hot Keys
