Hi Eamonn,

Thanks for the sites. yes, you could indeed use SAToGo on a dial-up
connection, in Togo or anywhere else! Registration is a bit slower, but
doable. You don't have to spend much time on-line now with the latest
release from the AIR Foundation.

Hi Cearbhall and Flor,

When I referred to changes in the subject line, i really meant the bit on
Skype alternative.

However, it is no harm to clarify things.

Just wondering if you could access the screen reader in question from the
country of Togo! - grin!

On a more serious note; for news on Africa you can check out:

www.allafrica.com

And African and Asian news on:
www.irinnews.org

Cearbhall: Look forward to hearing how you get on with SA to go, when
Skype isn't running. Good to know many of it's keystrokes are the same as
jaws.

Regards,

Eamonn

The correct and full name for the screen reader is now in the subject
line.
It is also commonly called SaToGo, pronounced Sa2Go, and is available at

www.satogo.com .

I hope I''ve also hereby demonstrated how easy it is to change the subject
line if a writer isn't happy with the existing description of his subject.

alternative

Thanks, Eamonn,

I don't think your subject line is quite right, I am sorry to say! The "AS
To Go" screen reader does not only give access to the web. it is sourced
from the web but then functions fully on your pc as if you loaded it using
your start menu.
I got it from www.accessibilityisaright.org/ from Dara's email to VICS
last
week. Registration is painless and free and taeks only a few seconds. That
gives you a user and pin for access to your settings of the way you want
the
AS To Go to operate on your system. You can use it without registering but
then you are loading it with the default settings every time.

Paul has kindly contacted me and instructed me to remove one of the Skype
Tools that is eating memory even though I never use it. I will report any
impact that might have on the use of AS To Go and Skype!

I will take a look at Voip Cheap and report back.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi Cearbhall,

Firstly, I've modified the subject line to reflect the email's contents.

You mentioned that Skype is a bit of a memory-hog.

As an alternative, you may like to try Voip Cheap.
www.voipcheap.co.uk

I've really only used it and Skype a couple of times, and wouldn't
describe
myself as being familiar with either program.

I don't know how Voipcheap compares to Skype in terms of using pc
resources.

Look forward to using SA to go. There's a demonstration of it to be found
on the Main Menu archive and also on Rick harmon's Blind Geek Zone. Come
to
think of it, I think it's the same demo.

Regards.

Eamonn

Hi all,

As I said in my last message, I am very impressed with this screen reader.
It emulates some of the more common JAWS key strokes and that makes it
very
comfortable for me to use as a JAWS user.

One serious drawback emerged later on after I had closed the "Access to
Go":
my PC slowed down considerably. Many keystrokes failed to function and it
was necessary to restart my computer to regain control.

As Skype was also open, I cannot be sure that the problem was caused by
the
screen reader alone. I find that Skype is a very selfish memory user and
impacts heavily on system resources.

I will try the screen reader again without loading Skype and see how the
system survives!

All the best,

Cearbhall

I'm glad you agree! I think that this should be excepted in the light
that
it's offered. Not as the primary screen reader for ones computer.
NVDA is marketed at that area of screen reading but instead, it is
marketed
as a temporary solution for situations where you do not have access to
your
required software but need to access a system temporarily.
